FocusWriter 1.4.0 released!

I have finally made the next feature release of FocusWriter, version 1.4.0. This release fixes almost all known bugs of the second beta, except for a couple that are out of my control (for instance, the invisible menus in Unity when minimizing). I also added a translation for Simplified Chinese.

I am also announcing that I am taking a partial break from my open source projects for the next several months. I will be adding translations and fixing reported bugs, and hopefully even making bugfix releases, but I will not be adding any features.

I hope you enjoy this release of FocusWriter!

    How do I add a spell check dictionary? I have found hunspell and have no idea what to do with it. Win7 sorry to be a noob.

    @Tom
    Also – any good links to themes?

  7. Graeme says:

    @Tom Actually, you don’t need hunspell. What you need are dictionary files, which you can download from the extension databases of Apache OpenOffice or LibreOffice.

    There are a variety of nice themes that you can find by searching for “FocusWriter themes” on Google.

    I went to the Apache link and grabbed the English(US) – en_US.oxt, English dictionary, FocusWriter did not accept the file. I will try some of the others. The file size is only 224K does not seem near large enough.

    Is the first one listed a better choice? Also, If I install an incorrect dictionary is there a way to remove it?

    Love FW -thanks.

    @Graeme
    One more question…. I do a fair bit of technical writing, does FW have support for bullets or numbered lists?

    That is the right file. When you go to the spell checking tab of the preferences and click “Add” next to the language, it doesn’t like the file? I was able to install it just fine, so I’m curious why it isn’t working for you.

    Is the first one listed a better choice?

    The first English listed contains several different English dialects and isn’t “better” unless you don’t want to download separate dictionary files for British English, Canadian English, etc.

    Also, If I install an incorrect dictionary is there a way to remove it?

    You can remove the dictionary files from disk manually, but you can no longer remove them from inside of FocusWriter (there is a long, boring technical reason as to why, but I may be adding that ability back in the next feature release).

    One more question…. I do a fair bit of technical writing, does FW have support for bullets or numbered lists?

    Yes and no. Yes in that you can add bullets manually from the symbols dialog (or from a keyboard shortcut defined in the symbols dialog), but no in that there is no support for lists.

    FocusWriter is designed primarily for creative writing, so lists are not a high priority (and the way QTextEdit handles them is awkward to write with, so I might not ever add them). You can still use FocusWriter for technical writing, of course, but that is not its target audience so it might not be the best tool for the job.

    Dear Graeme,

    thank you very very much for your work. I love your application, because it is small, smart and fast. It has everything I need. Thanks!

  12. Graeme says:

    You are most welcome! I am glad you like it.

    I’ve downloaded and paid a $5 tip but all that comes up when I click on it are typwriter keys…I keep clicking around and nothing’s happening…Please help

  14. Graeme says:

    I’m not quite sure what you mean. Are you saying you don’t have typewriter sound effects? Or that you can’t bring up the menus or parts of the interface?

    Sound effects have to be enabled in the preferences, they are off by default. If you can’t interact with the program, please report it here: http://gottcode.org/focuswriter/bugs/
